aside from the personalized salutation, the thing that threw us most is why someone who hawks "space station info" (apparently with a straight face) would be interested in our brand of snark.your site is very much interesting.

$200 a seat?!
willie nelson is coming to minnesota in october. mrs dbk, knowing i'm a willie nelson fan, suggested we get tickets. i just checked online and the cheapest tickets i could find for this shindig are $200 a seat.
the only person i'd pay $200 a seat to see in concert is john lennon.

Who Had to Die?
The interesting thing about this map is the "A," which is Ronokonkoma, a small town of approximately 20,000. But I suspect the key line in the Wikipedia entry for our purposes is:
Since 1988, Ronkonkoma has been the end of electrification along the Long Island Rail Road's Main Line.
As of about an hour and one-half from now (midnight EDT going into 3 September), there will be no LIRR service from the points East of that A.
If anyone who depends on mass transit wanted to leave in preparation for Hurricane Earl, their window—which until this evening's announcement included tomorrow morning—is basically closed.
You can blame the people (the New Orleans strategy), you can blame the lack of modernized infrastructure (the non-electrification of the rest of the LIRR), and you can blame G-d's Will, or something like that.
But the full blame doesn't go on Hurricane Earl if some people on Eastern Lon Gisland find themselves stranded without transportation.

deer in headlights
this is the governor of arizona, and she wants to continue in that job:

it really is bizarre, and kind of painful to watch. an opening statement is the easy part -- a quick introduction, highlight a few talking points, something about getting stuff done, ask for support, and move on. it's the part of a debate in which folks tend to memorize a short spiel so they come across as competent and set a good impression for the rest of the debate.
brewer just had a breakdown of sorts. worse, she seems to be referring to notes in front of her -- which would seemingly tell her what to say if she forgets -- but which didn't help.
by my count, there's a full nine seconds in which a stumped brewer says literally nothing. that may not sound like a long time, but on the air, during a debate, it's an eternity.
brewer is, by the way, the sitting governor. she's not some fringe candidate included in the debate as a courtesy -- brewer is currently the chief executive of arizona, and has been on the campaign trail for months...
update: but wait, there's more. when the subject turned to brewer's bogus claims about "beheadings," she got even more confused.

new american proverbs
in an effort to breathe some life into the discussion around here, bring stbk back to its comedic roots, and generally entertain, i am calling for submission of original, new american proverbs in the style of poor richard's almanack. i shall begin with this one, which i just made up myself:
UPDATE: oooo, oooo, here's another one:
don't judge a man by the quantity of alcohol he consumes when alone, but by the quality of the alcohol he shares with his friends.now have at it. enlighten and entertain one another.
UPDATE: oooo, oooo, here's another one:
education is most damaging to preconceptions, and therefore is most often opposed by that which is ill-conceived.this is fun.

forgotten voice
with the speech and the discussion of the end of the combat mission in iraq, many things and people seem to have been forgotten. one person who seems to have been forgotten was an important voice in blogtopia. i want to remind you of that voice.
what has happened to river? it is nearly three years since her sporadic reports of life in occupied iraq (baghdad burning) ended and nothing new has been posted in all that time.

a heartbreaking true story
of staggering insensitivity.
today, a personal story of a national tragedy. five years ago, hurricane katrina struck new orleans. abdulrahman zeitoun, a syrian-born new orleans building contractor, stayed in the city while his wife and children left to baton rouge. he paddled the flooded streets in his canoe and helped rescue many of his stranded neighbors. days later, armed police and national guardsmen arrested him and accused him of being a terrorist. he was held for nearly a month, most of which he was not allowed to call his wife, kathy. today, in a rare broadcast interview, abdulrahman and kathy zeitoun join us to tell their story, along with the man who chronicles it in the book zeitoun, dave eggers. - democracy now via countercurrents
