UNESCO World Heritage Committee meeting in Brasilia from 25 July to 3 August
The Committee is holding its 34th session. It is considering requests submitted by 33 States Parties to the World Heritage Convention for the inscription of new sites on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
Winners of UNESCO Literacy Prizes for 2010 are announced
This year’s UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize and UNESCO Confucius Prize for Literacy, as well as two Honourable Mentions, will go to innovative projects in Cape Verde, Germany, Nepal, Egypt, Malawi and Colombia. The award ceremony will take place at UNESCO in Paris on International Literacy Day, 8 September.
World Social Science Report 2010
The social sciences, which were dominated by western universities for a long time, are gaining ground in Asia and in Latin America, according to a report by the International Social Sciences Council (ISSC), published jointly with UNESCO. Entitled “Knowledge Divides”, it is a worldwide status report about these disciplines.
UNESCO Director-General to the Republic of Azerbaijan until 1 August
UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova is making her first official visit to the Republic of Azerbaijan. She is meeting President Ilham Aliyev and opening the Gabala International Music Festival.
Biodiversity is life: International Year of Biodiversity 2010
During the Year, UNESCO will lead activities to raise awareness of the importance of conserving biodiversity. The latest issue of UNESCO's newsletter "A World of Science" discusses the Global Diversity Outlook report released by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
